Planting and protection

August 17, 2018

Went and bought up a few more plants for the native bush area of our paddock project today. It's going to be very wet and windy over the weekend but today was lovely and sunny, with just a bit of a breeze. So I took three hours off from work to purchase new plants and then get them in the ground. Graham came out to help me for a short while and … [Read more...] about Planting and protection

Learning about Hellebores

August 14, 2018

I've recently joined the Ferny Creek Horticultural Society. I've been looking for a garden group for some time. One that has speakers, perhaps some garden visits, one where I can learn and mix and mingle with others. I want very much to see what others are doing and gain new ideas. After looking around and contacting a couple of clubs I decided to … [Read more...] about Learning about Hellebores

Winter work on a Sunday

August 12, 2018

Late winter here in the hills of Melbourne, Australia. We've had some pretty windy weather this winter. Usually that's in spring. Hoping that means it won't be so windy in the months to come. Over the past couple of days we've had 20mm of rain. Just over 40mm so far this month. Really at less than half of what's normal for the year to date.  Our … [Read more...] about Winter work on a Sunday

Daily walks around the garden

August 2, 2018

It is the custom of my husband and I to take daily walks around our property. We both work at home, and are at computers a lot of that time, so we make sure we get outside, get some fresh air and vitamin D and some exercise too.  I rarely ever walk outside without a camera in hand, or, at the very least, my Samsung S8. But most times it's one of my … [Read more...] about Daily walks around the garden

Camelias – winter flowers

July 31, 2018

The first of our camelias has shown up. They're very late this year. In past years we've had our bushes out in flower in May and June. Here it is, 31st July and we only have a very small number in flower, less than a dozen. And only two of the bushes are showing flowers, the third hasn't got any yet, that I've seen. Hopefully they'll all be a … [Read more...] about Camelias – winter flowers

Plant a Tree Day

July 27, 2018

Time to plant a tree! Did you know that trees are a vital habitat for endangered birds and animals? So now is the best time to plant a tree. Sunday 29 July is National Planting Tree Day. Plan to get out with family and friends and plant a tree, or two, or three! … [Read more...] about Plant a Tree Day

Hellebore in flower

July 24, 2018

At long last, our Hellebore are now in flower. And making quite a scene! These particular ones still under our fig tree at the front of our property but we have more in the back paddock, in the silver birch copse.  They're newer plants so smaller, but over time, as the silver birches grow, the hellebore will spread in size and number. They should … [Read more...] about Hellebore in flower
