A Visit to Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show

April 17, 2017

Ok, I’m a bit slow with writing about this.  I’ll get better, I promise! I got to go to this great show twice this year. The first day, was media day, and I’d been invited to attend a couple of media events. I heard about how it’s the 25th year for the Carpet Rose here in Australia and how Tesselaar’s were instrumental in that happening.  I listened to some who owned various stalls on show and they shared on their products, their plants, their tools, anything and everything related to gardening in one form or another. Met some interesting people too. I was privileged to go and love the opportunity to meet people, hear what’s happening in our industry and see spectacular gardens and displays.  The second time I went was on the Friday, with fellow photographers – just for the enjoyment of photographing what we see. The event is held in the Royal Exhibition Hall and the surrounding Carlton Gardens in Melbourne, Australia.

At a dinner on the Wednesday night I learnt that The Australian Garden Council was formed by the federal government and others. The announcement was originally in November 2015 but the website went live in March of this year and Prof Tim Entwhistle from the Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens is the Director and Chief, along with Graham Ross from Better Homes and Gardens as the Chair. This was brought about because it was recognised that Garden Tourism is big business and big $$$ and something that is of great value to our country – not just because of the money spent and made but because gardening is also a very healthy activity for all involved.  Also, in October this year, from the 8-14th will be the first ever National Garden Week here in Australia. I’m delighted for a few reasons – my love of gardening, the fact that gardening is being recognised as a healthy activity for all, but also the special week will be on during my birthday week. What a great way to celebrate my birthday! Think I might be busy attending events that week 🙂

Anyway, here are some images from the event a couple of weeks ago. So worth going to. If you haven’t yet been, write in your diary for end of March 2018 to make sure you go. And I’ll happily go with you!

Feel free to comment below – I’d love to hear from you. You can also follow my garden blog and others here.
